How to Protect Yourself From Cyber Stalkers

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011 | Internet with No Comments »

If you do not like the idea of cyber stalking, this is good because you will then be aware of the necessity to stay on your guard and protect yourself on the Internet.  To translate awareness into action, here are some useful tips on how to protect yourself from cyber stalkers:

-never ever put yourself in a position of disclosing your homes address especially if you happen to be a woman.  This is particularly important if you happen to be highly visible because of your employment or occupation.  Use password protection with a well chosen password to prevent access to your cell phone, e-mail account, banking account and so on.  Choose a secret security question where only you know the answer and no cyber stalkers can guess.  You should remember that  the candidate for the US Vice President Sarah Palin chose a security questions that were so easy to answer that a cyber stalker was able to gain access to her e-mail account.  Change your password at regular intervals.

-never give your Social Security number to anyone unless you are absolutely sure why it is required and by whom.  Anyone who possesses this number including a potential cyber stalker has access to large portions of your personal information.

-use statistics or registry counters that are free to keep a log of every incoming visitor to your Web site or your blog.  These counters are available for free and will provide you with details such as IP address, city, state, time and the laying of the Internet service provider.  Not only does is provide you with valuable marketing information that can be a powerful weapon in case the cyber stalker is aiming at your Web site or your blog.

-if you are having problems in your relationship such as with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend  and you fear that things are going to become messy, take the appropriate precautions.  Change the password on every single one of your accounts and make sure that you choose a password that the other person cannot guess.  Tell your bank and your credit companies that this particular person is not authorized to make any changes whatsoever on any of your accounts.  Even if the other person is all right and unlikely to damage you, you need to do this in any case to get on with your life.  It may also be a good idea to get a new cell phone and a new credit card and that the other person is unaware of.

Cyber stalkers choose no one, even celebrities and high profiles. Privacy protection programs for consumers like us are inadequate. So before you commit yourself to people you meet online, it is still advisable to run their identities through the best background check service online.

Google Instant Search – Do we need this?

Thursday, September 9th, 2010 | Internet with No Comments »

I personally see it as a way to show Google’s muscle power in the field of technical innovation! For me, a prompt that shows search term idea as I type in the search box is ENOUGH. Even if I consider the lifecycle of a web search performed by users, this option does not seem to be much attractive. I may be wrong! As Google mentioned in its blog, the core features of the Instant Search are:

  • Dynamic Results
  • Predictions
  • Scroll to Search

All good; my concern is around the term predictions; predictions against partial search term can be way far from my actual search term. I am really not sure how Google is going to take care of this! According to my understanding, it is quite impossible to achieve. Here is an example:

I wanted to search for ‘web design company’. As I typed the term ‘web’ the first result that I noticed was webmd.com; of course it is of no use for me!

There can be instances where Google Instant Search can show helpful result, but if that does not happen, then the feature is much annoying!

Hope there will be improvements down the line; they will also work on predictions. Let’s see what happens. But, technically, it definitely looks good!

Rediff Undergoes A Facelift

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 | Internet with No Comments »

Suddenly it appeared as if the site has been hacked. The old colourful and full-of-elements webpage has got a compact, search engine look now.

The ‘less is more’ touch makes it more like a search engine. Page Title also seems to have been modified – really really long page title that cannot be accommodated by firefox and the brand name is pushed out of the range of the title bar.

This looks odd – since the portal has got a trendy look (read “Google-look”), the title should not be so long; “Rediff.com – Indian Search Engine” could leave a better impact.

News, Movies, Cricket, Money, Rediffmail, My Page, iShare and Shopping – these sections are displayed on the home page along with a link to other services. Some news headlines and related videos are also displayed on the right side of the page. The main search box remains at the top.

Previously, links to Rediff matchmaker, Rediff blogs used to be displayed on the home page. They may decide to highlight these services on homepage periodically. Let’s wait and see what else Rediff has under its sleeves.

Google Vs. Global Warming

Sunday, January 18th, 2009 | Environment, Internet with No Comments »

Did you know that a Google search has a direct impact on earth’s environment? Physicists are saying so. An article published by CarbonOffsetDaily.com reveals that two Google searches performed from a desktop are equivalent to boiling a kettle of water!

According to Alex Wissner-Gross, Harvard University Physicist, one Google search produces 7gram of Carbon dioxide and millions of people use Google without knowing the fact. But even if they come to know the fact, will they stop using Google? That’s not possible; and if they do, global economy will be in danger.

But why environmentalists are behind Google? All web searches are likely to generate CO2 then why Google is being blamed only? Because the way it operates.

First, Google data centers involve huge deal of power. Secondly, to provide finest search result in minimum time, Google search engine sends queries to multiple servers and returns the result from the center that processes the query in shortest time.

However, it cannot be said, that other search engines do not have any impact on environment. The truth is when you switch on your PC, browse internet, visit web pages that contain images, animation, videos and graphics, send emails, chat and write blogs – you contribute to global warming.

Hence, blaming Google is not the solution. Data centers, where 24×7 power supply is mandatory, must be equipped with alternative energy all over the world.

And Google has started working on this front. Google is committed to reduce its impact on earth’s environment. Visit Going Green at Google to know more about this.

Moreover, in response to Alex Wissner-Gross, Google had published a blog post describing the power consumption of a Google search in a realistic and authentic manner. According to this calculation, one Google search produces 0.2gram of CO2. This calculation seems so authentic that Alex had to reconsider his calculation. Learn more about the debate on Official Google Blog.

Whatever is the correct figure, we need to be more cautious about our internet usage. Can we still use it for fun? What do you think?

Google Book Search Lawsuit Settled

Saturday, November 1st, 2008 | Internet with No Comments »

Google has recently settled the lawsuit brought by Author’s Gild and the Association of American Publishers (AAP). The lawsuit was filed against Google’s plan of scanning millions of books to make them available online for readers. The books were to be collected from local libraries and various other sources.

Authors and Publishers expressed their concern for in-copyright books and filed two lawsuits against Google Inc. After two years of negotiation, Google, Author’s Gild and AAP have come to a settlement – a ‘groundbreaking agreement’ if said in Google’s words.

According to the agreement Google agrees to pay $125 million to set up Book Rights Registry to keep track of in-copyright books. The registry will help readers to find and buy copyrighted books. This will also help them search books which are out of print.

In short, the agreement will help a lot of people; both copyright owners and readers will be benefited from it. Copyright owners can register their books with the Book Rights Registry and get compensation for subscriptions, sales and other revenues their work brings in.

In this age of paper-less culture, such a move is always welcome. Log on to Google Book Search – millions of books are just a click away!
